Washington State Casinos Object to Tax Hike

WASHINGTON – As reported by the (Washington) Sun Link: "The only two casinos in unincorporated Kitsap County can't afford an increase in the local gambling tax, casino representatives told the Kitsap County commissioners during a budget hearing Monday.

"Although any tax increase would be subject to a separate public hearing, the county budget presumes an increase, to 5 percent from 2 percent, in the gambling tax for house-backed card rooms.

"Tom Myers Jr., part-owner of All Star Casino in Silverdale, said his expenses are going up faster than revenues even without a tax hike.

"Furthermore, his casino is in competition with Hank's in Belfair, which pays no tax, and the casino operated by the Suquamish Tribe, Clearwater Casino, which had agreed to pay 2 percent to the county but never did.

"Bruce Meyer, general manager of Chips Casino in East Bremerton, said his expenses are increasing 20 percent to 30 percent next year — `and there's no way to pass that on.'…"
