Voters in Taiwan Islands OK Casinos30 December 2003TAIPEI, Taiwan – As reported by the Associated Press: ``A small majority of people voted Saturday in favor of opening casinos on a group of islands in a local-government poll that critics say is aimed at putting pressure on the national government to lift a ban on gambling. ``Officials said 7,830 voters -- or 56.11 percent -- approved the proposal to open casinos on Penghu islands -- located between Taiwan and China. ``…The local government organized the poll because it believes gambling houses would attract tourists and boost the economy. ``…The vote is the first since Taiwan's parliament passed a law last month that allows for referendums…" |
