Vancouver Track Pushes Slot Machine Effort1 August 2003VANCOUVER, British Columbia – As reported by the CBC News: “Vancouver city council has decided to send the proposal for slot machines at Hastings Park Racetrack to a public hearing this fall. “Council could have rejected the track's proposal for up to 900 slot machines on Thursday. But instead voted 5-4 to put the decision to the public for debate. “Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell supports the decision, noting that the city is already home to thousands of gamblers who go to neighbouring communities to spend their money. “…City councillor Tim Louis disagrees with the mayor, saying he is totally opposed to allowing slot machines in Vancouver. “…Just hours before the council's vote, anti-gambling protesters delivered a petition with 1,500 names to the premier's Vancouver office.” |
