US Equal Employment Agency Sues Colorado Casino Over English-Only Rule

3 April 2001

COLORADO -– As reported by the Rocky Mountain News: "Central Station Casino, one of Black Hawk's biggest gaming halls, is being sued by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission over a company policy that allegedly forbids its housekeeping staff from speaking Spanish at work.

"…The EEOC, which filed the civil rights suit Friday in Denver federal court, is seeking a permanent injunction to ban the policy, which the agency said discriminated against the casino's Hispanic workers.

" The suit also asks for monetary and punitive damages to be awarded to at least a half-dozen of the casino's Hispanic employees.

"…Management refused to remove the policy after workers voiced their objections, the suit said."
