Unlicensed Slots' Sale Time Grows by 90 Days

13 July 2000

ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO -- July 13, 2000 – As reported by the Albuquerque Journal: "The owner of nearly 1,000 unlicensed slot machines and other gambling devices has until late October to find a buyer, the state Gaming Control Board decided Wednesday.

"…The machines had been on the Mescalero Apache Tribe's reservation until late March, when the tribe removed the machines after a dispute with Gallegos.

"…The agreement allows the board to take custody of the machines and destroy them if Gallegos does not find a tribe or licensed casino to buy the machines before the agreement expires.

"…Gallegos has been talking to the Wyandotte Tribe of Oklahoma, which has hopes of opening a casino on tribal lands in Kansas, Diaz said. The tribe is negotiating a compact, or gambling agreement, with Kansas officials.

"…Gallegos and Diaz also said Taos Pueblo and a tribe in California have expressed interest in buying some of the machines.

"Diaz said the machines are worth about $5 million.

"After the Gaming Control Board meeting Wednesday, Diaz said the sale of the machines would help finance Gallegos' venture into a casino operation in Colorado..."
