UK MPs Call for Laws to Protect Children from Gambling8 July 2002UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the UK Daily Record: "MPs yesterday called for children to be protected from the dangers of gambling as Ministers defended plans to radically free-up betting laws. "The Government was warned its plan to boost the industry by £500 million a year could see more kids hooked on gambling. "…Tory culture spokesman John Greenway wants arcade owners prosecuted for allowing under-18s on cash-prize slot machines, saying: `It would only make sense.' "Rosemary McKenna, Labour MP for Cumbernauld and Kilsyth, said while it was impossible to prevent gambling addiction, there should be `clear rules about which machines are actually accessible to children'. "…But she said the betting industry shake-up, which stands to earn millions for the Government, `should contribute more to counselling and to those people who get into difficulties'.
