UK MPs Call for Laws to Protect Children from Gambling

UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the UK Daily Record: "MPs yesterday called for children to be protected from the dangers of gambling as Ministers defended plans to radically free-up betting laws.

"The Government was warned its plan to boost the industry by £500 million a year could see more kids hooked on gambling.

"…Tory culture spokesman John Greenway wants arcade owners prosecuted for allowing under-18s on cash-prize slot machines, saying: `It would only make sense.'

"Rosemary McKenna, Labour MP for Cumbernauld and Kilsyth, said while it was impossible to prevent gambling addiction, there should be `clear rules about which machines are actually accessible to children'.

"…But she said the betting industry shake-up, which stands to earn millions for the Government, `should contribute more to counselling and to those people who get into difficulties'.

"Labour MP Gareth Thomas pointed to research showing addicts were most likely to have started in their teens…"
