UK Jockey Club Reacts to Corruption Allegations

23 September 2002

UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the UK Evening Standard: "The Jockey Club today reacted quickly to question claims from Brian Wright that he made millions of pounds through allegedly corrupting jockeys.

"The 56-year-old Wright, subject of an international arrest warrant after allegedly masterminding a world-wide drugs operation, offered his betting activities as a means of accounting for his fortune.

"…John Maxse, the Club's director of public relations, said: `In previous drugtrafficking trials involving the Brian Wright organisation, their involvement and betting in racing has been put up as a front for their drug-trafficking. However, the jury was not convinced and convictions ensued. '

"…There is no evidence to back up claims that hundreds of horseraces were fixed.'"
