U.S. Official: Macau Casinos Will Bring Law Enforcement Challenges8 May 2002MACAU – As reported by the Associated Press: "As Macau opens its gambling industry to competition from Las Vegas casino operators, authorities must ensure it doesn't provide opportunities for counterfeiters and money launderers, a U.S. official said Wednesday. "`Based on our experience elsewhere in the world ... new gaming establishments could increase the amount of counterfeit U.S. currency circulated in Macau,'said Consul-General Michael Klosson, who is based in Hong Kong but also handles U.S. relations with neighboring Macau. "`We hope to address this potential problem through training and wider contact with Macau law enforcement authorities,' Klosson said in the text of a speech delivered at the University of Macau. "Amid a global crackdown on terrorism, Macau should also use the shake-up in its casino business `to put in place measures to prevent criminals here from using casinos to launder illicit funds,' Klosson said…" |
