U.K. Store Manager Gambles, Leaves Store in Ruins

UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the Hull Daily Mail: "A supermarket manager who went `off the rails', gambled away £33,000 (US$ 51,337)he had pilfered from the till during jaunts to Leeds.

"In the meantime, shoppers were left to find ageing meat and pasties sitting on the shelves.

"Graham Kerr, 33, enjoyed `all-night gambling sessions', before confessing his wrongs to his boss in a pub.

"… Last Friday the Darlington-based supermarket chain was fined £5,000 (US$7,777) at Hull Magistrates Court after being found guilty of five counts of breaching food safety laws.

"The store was also ordered to pay more than £5,000 (US$7,777) prosecution costs.

"…During a visit to Aldi's Preston Road supermarket in May 2001, Kingston upon Hull City Council's trading standards officers found five out-of-date cheese and onion pasties - some by as much as 12 days.

"They also discovered eight packets of pork sausages and four of bacon beyond their legal shelf life.

"Meanwhile, the manager was nowhere to be seen and there was only one employee in the store…"
