Tsongo Sun Granted Licence to Build Durban Casino Complex4 August 2000DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA –Aug. 4, 2000 – As reported by the African National Congress Daily News: "Durban was given a major boost to tourism, job creation and black empowerment on Friday when the city's first casino licence was awarded to the Tsogo Sun. "Tsogo Sun's chief executive, Jabu Mabuza, said the development would create around 20500 jobs, directly and indirectly in the development and operational phases. He said nearly 80 percent of the jobs would be sourced from KwaZulu-Natal. "…Tsogo Sun comprises a R1,4 billion casino, hotel and theme park complex adjacent to Durban's beachfront. The 25 hectare development at Durban's Village Green also incorporates convention and conference facilities and a multi-use arena which can house up to 3000 people for indoor sports events. "…The award was announced by the KwaZulu-Natal Gambling Board in terms of revised provincial legislation after bids for the province's two casino licences were resubmitted in May this year. "Tsogo Sun is an empowerment grouping held equally by black investors, including both union and employer bodies, and the hotel group Southern Sun. The group already operates highly profitable casinos in Witbank and Nelspruit. "…Construction at the Durban Village Green complex is scheduled to start later this year with a temporary casino opened by mid 2001. The main complex is due for completion in September 2002. "…Tsogo Sun has a casino management agreement with MGM Grand, which operates the world's largest hotel and casino complex in Las Vegas. "…The hotel will be operated by Southern Sun, one of the world's leading hotel management companies. " |
