Tribes Again Seek Casino Gaming in Wyoming

13 July 2000

CHEYENNE, WYOMING -- July 13, 2000 – As reported by Associated Press: "Tribal leaders plan to again ask state officials to allow casino gambling as a way to spur economic development on the Wind River Indian Reservation.

"Prior efforts have failed, largely because Gov. Jim Geringer has opposed expanded gaming, citing a soundly defeated 1994 state ballot initiative. That measure would have allowed casino-style gaming with a maximum of $25 bets in counties where voters approved it.

"…Council members want to expand offerings to include casino gambling in the hall, said Anthony Addison and Ben Ridgley, co-chairmen of the Northern Arapaho Business Council.

"…Attorney General Gay Woodhouse is setting up a team to negotiate with the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone tribes, she said Wednesday.

"…If negotiations succeed, the state and tribes will draw up a compact, which must be ratified by the Legislature.

"…Addison said if negotiations fail, the tribe might look into an Interior Department rule that allows tribes to seek an agreement with the federal government if they cannot reach an accord with their states."
