Tribe Seeks Land for Sacramento Casino20 February 2003SACRAMENTO, California – As reported by the Associated Press: "A Lake County Indian tribe on Wednesday asked a federal judge to give it land for a casino in West Sacramento. "Attorneys for the Upper Lake Band of Pomo Indians argued that U.S. District Judge Phyllis Hamilton must act to fulfill a 1983 court order that the government restore the tribe's property. "`The land of the original rancheria isn't there. They have to go somewhere else. Otherwise there will never be any land base for this tribe,' attorney Norman Ronneberg Jr. said. "But federal, state and local governments say the order only lets the tribe seek land on or near its original Lake County rancheria. "…The band is working with a Florida investment group to buy 67 acres in West Sacramento for a $200 million casino along the Interstate 80 corridor between San Francisco and Reno…" |
