Tribal Casino Planned for Wisconsin Town21 August 2002WAUSAU, Wisconsin – As reported by the Associated Press: "With surveys showing city residents about evenly split on whether a casino should be built here, Mayor Linda Lawrence said there was a `great chance' the Ho-Chunk Nation would build a casino, hotel and convention center in Wausau. "The tribe has identified three possible sites and its representatives met with administrators of various city departments Monday to talk more about developing a specific proposal, Lawrence said. "…Ho-Chunk attorney William Boulware said an agreement the tribe signed with the state in 1998 allows the tribe to build a fourth casino in Wisconsin, and they've been looking for another site for years. "…Wausau city officials are interested in the annual revenue a casino could bring to the city. The Ho-Chunk could pay perhaps $1 million annually instead of property taxes. "…Any plan to open a casino in Wausau would require the approval of the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs, a process that takes at least 18 months, Lawrence said. "…The tribe's 1998 compact with the state requires that the governor approve a fourth casino, provided the project gets support from the county where the casino would be located, said F. Scott Scepaniak, administrator of the state Division of Gaming. "Gov. Scott McCallum has repeatedly said he would not support any expansion of casino gambling in Wisconsin…" |
