Time is Ripe for Harrisburg Riverboat Gambling, Ferlo says19 March 2003HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania – As reported by Pittsburgh Tribune Review: `` The Legislature should consider legalizing riverboat gambling or a land-based casino near the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Downtown, state Sen. Jim Ferlo said Tuesday. ```I think it's a way to reimburse the city for some needed revenue,' said Ferlo, a Highland Park Democrat. Ferlo said he will `absolutely' introduce a bill or an amendment to legalize casino gaming if the debate at the Capitol moves beyond legalizing slots at horse-racing tracks. He plans to raise the issue first with Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell. ``…Slots at tracks are a major part of the expanded state spending plan Rendell will announce next Tuesday. As a candidate last year, Rendell was cautious about committing to gambling beyond slots. But as the mayor of Philadelphia, Rendell was an enthusiastic supporter of riverboat gambling. ``Ken Snyder, Rendell's spokesman, said yesterday the governor is not philosophically opposed to riverboat gambling but 'doesn't believe it would be appropriate at this time.'…" |
