Thailand's Thaksin's Party MPs Back Call to Legalise Casinos27 March 2002THAILAND -- As reported by Bangkok Post: ``Thai Rak Thai MPs say legalising casinos could keep billions of baht from flowing out of the country each year. ``The House committee on finance and banking has set up a working group to look at the idea. ``Siri Wangboonkerd, an MP, said Thai gamblers spent 300 billion to 400 billion a year in casinos in Burma and Cambodia. Pinit Chantharasomboon, another MP, said as many as 50 million people bought lottery tickets regularly. ``Members called on House committee chairman Burin Hirunburana to send them to Las Vegas to study the gambling industry. ``...The move comes as his police chief, Sant Sarutanont, vexes his mind on how to stop people gambling on World Cup football matches..." |
