11 April 2002

THAILAND –As reported by Ananova: "Thailand's police plan to monitor mobile phone and internet traffic for evidence of illegal World Cup gambling.

"Gambling is illegal in Thailand, with the exception of a state-sponsored lottery.

"…National police chief General Sant Sarutanonda has asked the state-run Telephone Organisation of Thailand to co-operate.

"..Betting on sport is, however, common and there is a thriving illicit lottery.

"A recent study by Assumption University suggested that 9 billion baht (US$207 million) will be illegally gambled during the tournament starting on May 31."
