Thai Police Chief Backs Casino Plan27 August 2002BANGKOK, Thailand – As reported by the Associated Press: "Thailand's national police chief on Tuesday backed a long-standing proposal to legalize casinos as a way of generating revenue for the country and attracting tourists. "`I strongly support the legalization of casinos because we can save billions of baht (millions of dollars) that flow from the country every year,' national police chief Gen. Sant Sarutanond told reporters, referring to Thais who travel abroad to gamble. "…Sant said that while he endorses plans to build lucrative casinos, he stands against illegal gambling dens that are common in Thailand. "Plans to set up casinos in Thailand have been tabled by successive governments in the past 15 years. "…Although most gambling is illegal in Thailand, it is tolerated and widespread. "…Researchers at Bangkok's Assumption University estimated earlier this year that Thai gamblers would bet some 9.1 billion baht (US$217 million) on World Cup matches." |
