Texas tribe considers Vegas style casino4 December 2007TEXAS -- As reported by the American Statesman: "After losing another legal round in its long fight to expand gambling in Texas, the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe on Monday raised the prospect of opening its Eagle Pass casino to Las Vegas-style gaming unless the U.S. Supreme Court intervenes. "The Kickapoos legally operate a casino limited to poker and bingo, and this summer, the U.S. secretary of the interior gave preliminary approval for the tribe to expand to traditional casino-style games, except slot machines. "A three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, however, ruled that the federal agency had overstepped its bounds, and last week, the 15-member appellate court refused hear the case. "...Yet tribal Chairman Juan Garza Jr. suggested Monday that the tribe could expand gambling anyway, if the Supreme Court does not intervene, which would put the tribe on a collision course with state authorities..." |
