Texas Casino Cruise Ship Gets Approval to Leave Port

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –– As reported by the Associated Press: "Operators of the Texas Treasure Casino Cruise, involved in a wage lawsuit with 23 employees, have posted $250,000 in bonds in exchange for federal court approval to leave port for Mexico and Alabama.

"The casino boat is scheduled to travel Jan. 14 to Mexico to fulfill immigration requirements for its foreign-born crew and then to Mobile, Ala., for improvements such as new carpeting.

"Employees had sought an injunction forbidding the ship to leave shore. They said they feared the cruise ship operators would flee to avoid trial on their suit for unpaid overtime.

"…Attorneys for both sides said they were pleased by the arrangement since it allows the ship to continue cruises.

"…The employees who brought suit claim they regularly worked more than 40 hours a week but were never paid at the time-and-a-half rate.

"The Texas Treasure originally claimed its casino workers qualified as seamen and so were not eligible for overtime. Attorneys for the cruise ship operator have since agreed with the judge that is not the case…"
