Tennessee County Commissioner Exploring Casino Idea19 November 2002TENNESSEE – As reported by Go Memphis: "He faces some mighty tall legal hurdles, but County Commissioner John Willingham says he's exploring the idea of turning The Pyramid into a casino. "Willingham said Monday that he's meeting this week with `at least one group' with casino ties interested in seeing the building sold or leased to an Indian tribe for casino gambling. "`It could be very lucrative to the City of Memphis, Shelby County and the State of Tennessee,' said Willingham, who chairs the commission's public service and tourism committee. "…Willingham, who has asked the county attorney to investigate the possibility of a casino, does not appear to have the law on his side. "State law forbids gambling, including casinos. Despite the recent passage of a constitutional amendment allowing a state lottery, state Atty. Gen. Paul Summers has said such a vote would not clear the way for Indian casino gambling. "The lottery referendum specified that it `does not authorize games of chance associated with casinos, including, but not limited to, slot machines, roulette wheels, and the like.'…" |
