Taiwan Police Probed in Illegal Gambling Investigation

TAIWAN – As reported by the Taiwan News: "A Taoyuan district prosecutor yesterday mobilized dozens of agents from the Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau to question and search the offices of eight senior police officers suspected of collaborating with a syndicate running gambling video parlors in northern Taiwan.

"Among those under investigation for their alleged involvement are Yen Te-lin and Su Yung-fang, deputy director and senior specialist of the Personnel Office of the National Police Administration.

"Yen, Su and some senior officers in Taoyuan were suspected of accepting bribes from casino operators to cover up their illegal operations.

"…Lee An-ping, chief of the public security office of the Taoyuan County Police Department, had been under investigation because the number of licenses for video arcades issued by his office has increased rapidly since Lee assumed his position.

"According to the preliminary investigation, Lee often went out with video casino operators and through them he met Han Tzu-chiang, who was in charge of the syndicate and owns many video casinos in Taoyuan.

"In order to protect his business, Han has allegedly made great efforts to develop good relationships with police officers at central and local levels in recent years…"
