Sydney Casino Rocked by Over 50 Allegations

16 June 2000

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA -- June 16, 2000 – As reported by AAP: "More than 50 submissions alleging criminality at Sydney's Star City Casino have been received as part of an expanded inquiry into the operation of the gaming complex.

"…Casino Control Authority-appointed barrister Peter McClellan, QC, will conduct a series of closed hearings to investigate the information.

"…Details of the probe were announced last month following a prolonged parliamentary assault on [New South Wales Gaming and Racing Minister] Mr Face over claims money laundering was going unchecked at the casino.

"The opposition alleged it had found criminal links to three gamblers randomly plucked from a list of regular high rollers at the complex.

"CCA head Kaye Loader was forced to resign soon after when she conceded feeling 'sorry' over the banning of a convicted drug dealer from the casino.

"Opposition gaming spokesman Robert Oakshott also used parliament to allege the supplying of cocaine at Star City on June 1.

"…The heart of his report will determine if the operator of the casino 'is suitable to give effect to the casino licence' and whether or not 'it is in the public interest that that licence should continue in force'.

"It is also expected to contain recommendations on problem gambling and its impact on the community and Star City's adherence to harm minimisation principles."
