Sweepstakes Proposed to Subsidize Massachusetts Tracks14 June 2001BOSTON, Massachusetts –– As reported by the Associated Press: "A group of lawmakers is proposing an unusual way to promote gambling at the state's race tracks: more gambling. "The House is considering creation of a new sweepstakes ticket to subsidize the state's dog and horse tracks, where hundreds of millions of dollars are wagered each year on live and simulcast races. "…Owners of the state's four dog and horse racing tracks have squabbled for years over the state's lucrative simulcast betting industry, claiming that the tracks -- and their 8,000 workers -- would go bankrupt without it. "Last year, $309 million was placed on simulcast bets at Massachusetts tracks, nearly three times the amount placed on actual live bets at the tracks. In 1999, $265 million was bet on simulcast races, according to the state Racing Commission. "…Despite the huge simulcast bets, supporters say the tracks need a helping hand from the state to boost purses, draw topflight talent, and attract enough visitors to stay afloat…" |
