Suspect in Scam Videotaped Gambling at the Mirage13 June 2001BOSTON –- As reported by the Associated Press: ``Prosecutors want to revoke the bail of an attorney charged with concealing $1.6 million stolen from state treasury coffers after he was videotaped gambling in a Las Vegas casino last weekend. ``Richard C. Arrighi had been given special permission to leave the state to visit his sick wife in Florida. Instead, he went to Nevada to gamble at the Mirage, where state police videotaped Arrighi trying his luck at $100 minimum bet tables, according to prosecutors. ``…Four days before the trip, Arrighi asked an Essex County Probate and Family judge for permission to miss a deposition in a paternity suit because his wife needed his help in Florida during her recovery from ovarian cancer. ``Arrighi's most recent trip was preceded by a complimentary trip to the Mirage from April 27 to April 30, during which Arrighi averaged of $908 per bet and lost more than $27,600. ``All told, Arrighi visited the Las Vegas casino at least 16 times since Jan. 2000, averaging one to three days per trip, according to the bail revocation order. ``…Arrighi, 46, formerly of Dover, is one of seven men charged with looting the state Treasury. Three of the seven have pleaded guilty in connection with the scheme, which prosecutors describe as the largest theft of public funds in state history…" |
