Survey: Buffalo Residents Strongly Oppose Tribal Casino21 May 2002BUFFALO, New York: "Casino opponents say it's evidence of the public's anger at being left out of the political process. "Supporters say it's just one more indication of the need to develop a casino that will help, not hurt, Buffalo. "A Buffalo News survey identifying widespread opposition to an Indian-owned casino in Buffalo left supporters clamoring for an explanation Monday and critics hailing it as a long-awaited wake-up call. "…The results indicate almost 60 percent of all Niagara County residents favor an Indian-owned casino in the Falls while more than half of all Erie County residents oppose a similar casino in Buffalo. "Mayor Anthony M. Masiello said the results reflect the emotional debate over gambling. He also suggested most of the opposition is rooted in the suburbs, not the city. "…While tribal law requires a referendum, there is nothing in state or federal law giving local residents the power to vote on a casino in their community. "…Under federal law, Indian tribes have the right to open casinos on their own lands or, in this case, on property they would buy in Niagara Falls and Buffalo…" |
