Supreme Court to Review Louisiana Casino Referendum31 October 2002LOUISIANA – As reported by the Associated Press: "The Louisiana Supreme Court will be asked to permit Cameron Parish to bypass the Legislature and conduct a local referendum to attract a riverboat casino, an attorney for the parish said Thursday. "On Wednesday, the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a district judge and agreed with the secretary of state that the parish had no legal reason to bring suit and hold a local vote on allowing casino gambling. "The Isle of Capri is proposing a $50 million deal to the parish to host one of its two riverboats that are currently berthed in Lake Charles. The parish wants a vote on two items: allowing riverboat gambling and designating the lower Sabine River as a waterway that can have dockside wagering…" |
