SunCruz Casinos Allowed in Florida Waters24 April 2003FLORIDA -- As reported by the Florida Sun Sentinel: "After years of fighting by the city to knock SunCruz Casinos out of the Intracoastal Waterway, an appeals court on Wednesday agreed gambling boats are a permitted use. "The 4th District Court of Appeal reaffirmed Broward County Judge John A. Miller's December 2001 decision that a larger SunCruz boat had to go, but a smaller ship could stay. "Since the mid-1990s, some nearby residents had complained about the noise. In 1998, the city filed a lawsuit against the owners of SunCruz, arguing that since 1995 the boat was being replaced by larger and larger vessels. "Though Hollywood wasn't able to completely get rid of the floating casinos, this latest decision carries some good news. "...The gambling boats are owned by the estate of Miami Subs founder Gus Boulis, who was murdered in Fort Lauderdale in 2001. The company, which has filed for bankruptcy, owns 11 boats operating out of nine ports in Florida, including from the dock of Martha's Restaurant in Hollywood..." |
