Study: New York Tribal Casino Benefits Counties

ALBANY, New York –March 30, 2001 –As reported by the New York Times-Union:"While government leaders work to gain tax revenues from them, the Oneida Indian Nation of New York are building enterprises -- particularly their casino -- that contribute mightily to an economically distressed region of the state, a new Zogby International study reports.

"The Oneidas, operators of Turning Stone Casino and several other businesses, have become the biggest employers in Madison and Oneida counties and are proposing substantial expansion of their gaming operations in Verona.

"…The study, examining the impact of the Oneidas' operations over the past decade, comes as other Indian nations propose casinos around the state -- the Seneca in Buffalo, the Mohawks in Monticello and Catskill, and the the Stockbridge Munsee in Thompson, Sullivan County.

"…`The Oneida Nation is a mainstay of the local economy, providing economic stability, job opportunities and business opportunities for a host of local and regional businesses,' Zogby said in the new report.

"Zogby, who regularly does an economic analysis for the Oneida, said in the new report that the Indian nation employs 2,857 -- 86 percent of them non-Indians -- and has an annual payroll, not including benefits, of $63 million. The nation spent more than $123 million with outside vendors and suppliers in 2000 and invested $20 million in capital projects…"
