Steve Wynn to Tear Down Desert Inn

22 June 2000

CARSON CITY, NEVADA -- June 22, 2000 – As reported by Reuters: "Casino mogul Steve Wynn told the Nevada Gaming Commission Thursday that he intends to tear down the Desert Inn hotel and casino on Las Vegas' famed Strip and replace it with a 6,000-room twin-tower luxury hotel and gaming complex.

"The commission granted Wynn an unrestricted gaming license and approved his $270 million purchase of the Desert Inn from Starwood Hotels & Resort Worldwide Inc., said Marilyn Epling, the commission's executive secretary.

"…Wynn also indicated that he would change the name of the new, 59-storey hotel casino from Desert Inn, but did not say what the new name would be, Epling said.

"He said the Desert Inn would close on Sept. 30 and he hoped to start construction on the new project in about nine months. The hotel has 1,500 employees and Wynn said he would try and find them work in other casinos. They would also get priority in hiring once his new casino opens.

"…Wynn said that non-gaming activities were making more money than gaming at the new mega resorts and that his new resort would have better restaurants, better shops and more exotic attractions..."
