Staying on Track After the Finish Line27 August 2003NEW YORK -- As reported by the Thoroughbred Times: ``The issue of what to do with thoroughbreds after their racing careers are over is a hot topic among horse people. ``The racing world was shocked earlier this year when it learned that Ferdinand, a 19-year-old thoroughbred, winner of the 1986 Kentucky Derby and 1987 Horse of the Year, went to slaughter in Japan last year because his career at stud was unremarkable. ```A number of rescue organizations have taken on the mission of educating owners, trainers and others to save thoroughbreds from slaughter. ``Among those supporters is Elizabeth Wood Zuber whose passion is training ex-racehorses for new careers. ``Three years ago, after hearing about CANTER, the Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses, on the Internet, she and her husband traveled to a race track in Ohio where CANTER volunteers work, to bring back a thoroughbred. CANTER provides retiring racehorses opportunities for new careers after the finish line. ``Since then, the Zubers have brought back about 30 horses. Many are pre-sold. CANTER's Web site offers pictures of horses that are ending their careers, available to buy or adopt at thoroughbred race tracks in six states. CANTER volunteers walk the tracks taking listings and photographs for web postingsā¦" |
