State Probes Ex-49er's California Business: Casinos allegedly Paid from Agency's Funds23 February 2001REDWOOD CITY, California – Feb. 23, 2001 – As reported by the San Francisco Chronicle: ``State investigators searched former San Francisco 49ers player Ray Wersching's insurance agency in Redwood City yesterday, looking into allegations that at least $1 million in premiums disappeared and that more than half of it went to Nevada casinos. ``Authorities appear to be focusing on Mary Anne Locke, a former partner in the agency who was hired by Wersching five years after serving time for embezzlement, premium theft and other fraudulent transactions. Locke's home was also searched, as were five financial institutions, including bank accounts and stock brokerage files. ``California Department of Insurance agents are probing allegations that more than $500,000 was paid out of Wersching's agency funds to various Nevada casinos and that another $500,000 went to Locke. `` Wersching, a former placekicker for the football team, did not return calls yesterday. Locke could not be reached for comment. ``...Edelen said it has yet to be determined how many people were bilked out of money, but he is hoping that publicity about the case will prod Wersching's clients to check their policies..." |
