Sportsbook.com Posts Home Run Odds

29 August 2005

NEW YORK – (PRESS RELEASE) -- With just over a month to go in the season, Sportsbook.com has posted revised odds on who will lead the League in home runs. Though the race is tight, with only four home runs separating the top three sluggers, Andruw Jones has been listed as the heavy favorite with 5- 9 odds. He is followed by Derrek Lee at 2-1 and Alex Rodriguez at 4-1.

"This is one of the more interesting home run derby's we've had, especially since two of the top three were not on anyone's list of favorites before the season started," said Peter Childs, Odds Maker, Sportsbook.com. "It's made for an interesting race for fans and bettors to follow, and the winner is still very much up in the air."

The surprising performance of Jones and Lee, neither of which was among the top 20 favorites heading into the season, is proof of how betting early can reap tremendous rewards. When Sportsbook.com posted its derby odds prior to the start of the season, Andruw Jones was listed at 100-1. A $100 bet on Jones then would result in a $10,000 win if he goes on to capture the race. That same bet today would result in a win of just over $55. Even betting early on a pre-season favorite like Rodriguez would pay out double than a bet on him today.

With only ten home runs separating tenth place on the derby list from first place, the race is not over yet. Other contenders include Adam Dunn (12-1), Albert Pujols (12-1), Manny Ramirez (20-1) and Mark Teixeira (15-1).

"All the guys in the running are proven home run hitters. All it takes is for someone to get into a groove at the end of the season and they can easily make up the ground on the leaders," added Childs.

Below is a list of the players currently in the top ten in home runs this season, along with their current odds to win the home run derby and their original odds.
