South Carolina Casino Boat Restriction Stands20 November 2001CONWAY, South Carolina – Nov. 20, 2001—As reported by the (South Carolina) Sun News: "…On Monday, the Zoning Board of Appeals denied Legrand Weaver's request for an exception that would have allowed the Queen Mary II to dock at his Bucksport Plantation Marina. "Board members opposing the request said the operation violated federal laws and would create a flood of requests. "…Weaver needed the board's blessing to break the county's month-old ordinance that restricts casino boats from operating within 2,000 feet of a residence. Weaver plans to appeal the decision to Circuit Court. "Two weeks ago, the Queen Mary II was shut down after the S.C. Supreme Court clarified that casino boats can't operate in state waters. The owner is upgrading the boat so it can sail to international waters, where gambling is allowed. "…Horry County has three licensed casino boats: Sun Cruz X, Stardancer and Southern Elegance. "Several local governments recently have pursued stricter regulations over casino boats, and a state court clarification two weeks ago also dealt a blow to the business. "The S.C. Supreme Court clarified the boats can't operate in state waters, closing a loophole from a previous ruling. "In North Myrtle Beach, City Council has proposed requiring gambling boats to dock only at a boatyard, but there aren't any boatyards in the city. The council also wants to prohibit shuttle service from any dock to any boat anchored offshore or docked elsewhere for safety reasons…" |
