Snow Doesn't Faze Gamblers

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "It could be the moment of apocalypse and the dice would still roll, the roulette wheel still whirl.

"…At the craps table, a woman was playing double the minimum $15 bet while her husband was gone.

"Someone mentioned the snow.

" "`What snow?' she asked.

"…`Oh, I know it snowed yesterday. Has it snowed yet today?' she asked.

"…Travelers from all over the Eastern Seaboard found themselves stuck in Atlantic City because of the snow, but they weren't upset. As long as liquor flowed at the bar and cards were dealt at the tables, everything was OK.

"At several casino hotels, the story Monday was the same: 100 percent of rooms occupied, staffing levels light but adequate, and reduced hours at restaurants.

"…Transportation services canceled Monday — such as buses to Bally's, Caesars Atlantic City and Atlantic City Hilton Casino Resort, and limousine service at Showboat — were expected to resume today.

"…On the casino floor at Trump Marina, the atmosphere was somewhat euphoric, as if those who would normally feel guilty about gambling and living the good life in Atlantic City were absolved because the snow had left them no other choice.

"…Having extra time to gamble gave some another chance to come out ahead.

"Deborah Williams, 36, of Queens, N.Y., was down a few hundred dollars when she was supposed to leave Sunday morning. Stuck because of the snow, Williams killed time playing slots and won the jackpot…"
