Singapore Police Raid Suspected Illegal Lottery Centres23 June 2003SINGAPORE – As reported by the Straits Times: ``Police arrested 10 people yesterday during an islandwide raid on eight homes that apparently doubled as illegal public lottery collection centres. ``The allegedly illegal 4D collection syndicate would collect bets and then fax the entries to the main operation centre in Malaysia. ``Acting on a tip-off, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department's Gambling Suppression Branch fanned out to homes in MacPherson, Jurong East, Bukit Batok and Tampines, among other places. ``Six men and four women, aged 40 to 69, were nabbed. Police also seized a personal computer, a mobile phone, a shredding machine and six fax machines. ``And then there was the money. In total, police estimated $32,000 had been collected yesterday, with one centre chalking up $18,000…” |
