Senator McCain to Resurrect Sports Betting Ban Effort14 November 2002WASHINGTON, DC – As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal: "Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Wednesday he will resume efforts next year to prohibit Nevada sports books from taking bets on amateur athletic events. "McCain declined to set a date to reintroduce a bill proposing the betting ban. "The addition of Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican who co-sponsored the betting ban in the House and was elected last week to the Senate, should be helpful, McCain said. "…Since the betting ban legislation did not pass this two-year session of Congress, McCain will have to start over from scratch next year. Similar legislation in the House also will have to be reintroduced. "But with Republicans winning control of the Senate in last week's elections, McCain will be in a stronger position to push the betting ban. He will regain the chairmanship of the Senate Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over the legislation. "…But the bill stalled because the panel deadlocked 10-10 on an Ensign proposal calling for a national study of illegal gambling instead of a betting ban…" |
