Senate Leader Makes Push for Chicago Casino

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois -- As reported by the Copley News Service: "Illinois Senate President Emil Jones, D-Chicago, said Monday he is pushing forward with legislation containing a land-based, city-owned casino for Chicago, claiming Gov. Rod Blagojevich supports the idea.

"...But a Blagojevich spokeswoman said the governor's opinion on a Chicago casino is "unformed."

"...Other legislative leaders hold little hope for any gaming expansion during the General Assembly's six-day veto session, claiming "commitment phobia" until Blagojevich publicly steps out on a limb.

"David Dring, spokesman for House Minority Leader Tom Cross, R-Oswego, said Republicans have been waiting for Blagojevich to make a move on gambling for the past 20 months.

"Blagojevich last year said he would veto any legislation containing a Chicago casino, but has recently said he is open to 'reasonable' gambling options. Jackson sidestepped the possible flip-flop on a Chicago casino by saying the governor supports "reasonable legislation.'..."
