Score $6.49 million at the 2002 Grey Cup Lottery

24 June 2002

TORONTO,Canada – (Press Release) --What a team, what a game, what a score! Canada's favourite lottery game, LOTTO 6/49, and the Canadian Football League (CFL), tonight kicked off a nation-wide celebration of the lottery's 20th anniversary, announcing that a lucky LOTTO 6/49 player will win $6.49 million, live on CBC and RDS, during the Halftime Show at the 2002 Grey Cup Game in Edmonton on November 24.

On behalf of the national lottery game, Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLGC) Chair and CEO Ron D. Barbaro, and CFL Senior Vice President Marketing and Partnerships, Brent Scrimshaw announced that a series of special LOTTO 6/49 draws will be held in October to determine contestants for a live draw for $6.49 million during the Grey Cup Halftime Show on November 24.

"By teaming Canada's favourite lottery with Canada's own football championship and the oldest trophy in pro sports, we really have something to cheer about!" said Mr. Barbaro. "What better way to celebrate than by awarding $6.49 million to one lucky lottery player, live on national television." Said Mr. Scrimshaw,

"2002 is a landmark year for both organizations as we celebrate together the twentieth anniversary of LOTTO 6/49 in the environment of a national icon, the 90th edition of Canada's Grey Cup. This is a Canadian partnership that will resonate with sports fans and lottery customers from coast to coast as we crown the 2002 Grey Cup Champions and Canada's newest multi-millionaire."

During October, a series of nine consecutive LOTTO 6/49 regular draws, from October 2 through October 30, 2002, will each be followed by additional draws for six sets of six numbers. Winners matching all six numbers on any of the additional six sets of numbers (to a maximum of 30 winners per draw date) win a Grey Cup weekend for two, plus a chance at the $6.49 million Halftime Show draw. One lucky contestant will win the top prize and the others will share equally in a secondary prize pool of $2 million.

All Grey Cup weekend winners will receive airfare, accommodations, ground transportation, invitations to an exclusive party and special LOTTO 6/49 20th Anniversary clothing from Roots.

Tonight's announcement took place during a special Ontario promotion that also celebrated LOTTO 6/49's anniversary. Winners of radio contests from across the province were invited to a special anniversary celebration and a chance to win $649,000.

The Canadian Football League's nine teams compete annually for the Grey Cup, Canada's oldest professional League championship trophy. The 90th Grey Cup will be played in Edmonton on November 24, 2002.
