School Bookkeeper Embezzled $50,000

FLORIDA – As reported by the Miami Herald: "A woman who kept the books at a Broward County school now faces felony charges, accused of stealing nearly $50,000 from those accounts, and according to investigators, she may have spent the money in gambling casinos.

"The suspected embezzlement was discovered after parents who had children attending Pasadena Lakes Elementary School were told that they owed money to the school. They were told their children could not participate in after-school programs and field trips because they had not made payments.

"…Co-workers say that they considered [Deborah Jean Miller] a talented bookkeeper until an audit last year turned up $50,000 in missing money - money for which Miller was responsible.

"…According to the school board investigation, Miller is deeply in debt and also has an apparent passion for gambling. They say that Miller wrote dozens of check for thousands of dollars to the Hollywood Seminole Casino. Investigators believe those funds likely came from the school account…"
