Schlichter Lawyer Investigated

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana –Jan. 24, 2001 – As reported by the Associated Press: "The lawyer who supplied a cell phone for former NFL quarterback Art Schlichter to place bets from jail is under investigation by the Indiana Supreme Court's Disciplinary Commission.

"Linda Wagoner, who served as a public defender for Schlichter last fall, pleaded guilty in December to a misdemeanor trafficking charge for smuggling the telephone into the Marion County Jail in Indianapolis. She received a suspended 180-day sentence and was ordered to pay a $25 fine.

"…Schlichter, a former Colts quarterback, pleaded guilty last week to federal charges relating to credit-card fraud, money laundering and the interstate transportation of forged securities.

"…Schlichter, the No. 1 draft pick by the then-Baltimore Colts in 1982, was suspended by the NFL in 1983 for gambling…"
