Saskatoon Casino Proposal Headed for Referendum

31 March 2003

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan – As reported by the Saskatoon Star Phoenix: "It appears Saskatoon is headed for a referendum on the $65-million casino proposed for downtown, after opponents raised the required number of signatures on a petition.

"…The question is, when will the public have their vote?

"The Coalition Against Gambling Expansion in Saskatoon (CAGES) and Citizens For a Quality Saskatoon (CFQS) are calling for the vote in October.

"…They intend to narrow city council's options by dragging the process out as long as possible, handing in their petition on the last possible day, which is April 23 at 4 p.m.

"…The stall tactics anger Coun. Rik Steernberg.

"`I would assume their goal is to have the referendum, not say when it has to be done. That's not up to them, it's up to council,' he said.

"`It would be unfair of them to manipulate the agenda and hold on to the petition until the latest possible date in order to make it more difficult for everyone else.'

"..CFQS quashed a casino proposal in 1994 through a public vote. CAGES was formed late last year to rally public opposition to the latest proposal. The groups later formed a coalition with CAGES acting as the legal financial arm."
