Riverboat Casino Creates Turf Battle14 November 2002OKLAHOMA – As reported by the Oklahoma KTUL: "Webbers Falls - There's a power struggle going on between some Native Americans in Green Country. At issue is a riverboat casino that promises money and jobs. It's proposed for Webbers Falls along the banks of the Arkansas River, with an opening date of January first. But, there's a turf war underway. One tribe wants to build the casino -- another is saying no. That's because they say the Arkansas River belongs to them. "It's front page news in a sleepy little town. Southern Cherokees are hoping to bring a riverboat casino to the banks of the Arkansas River. "…But, some say not so fast. "`The Southern Cherokee Nation is not a tribe and never has been,' says Richard Osburn. Osburn is a prosecutor with the official Cherokee Nation. He says Southern Cherokees aren't really a tribe and people need to know that. "…`They have no legitimate right to operate a gambling facility in the Cherokee nation,' Osburn says…" |
