Rhode Island Lawmakers Want Gambling Election31 March 2003WEST WARWICK, Rhode Island – As reported by the Associate Press: "Local legislators want a special election in November that would allow Rhode Island voters to determine the fate of casino gambling. "That proposal, along with others being considered by the General Assembly, would open the door for a casino operated by the Narragansett Indian tribe and Las Vegas-based Harrah's Entertainment Inc. in the town's industrial park. "Under state law, a casino would require the permission of voters at a general election. But the next general election isn't until 2004. "Proponents of the special election hope that getting a quicker start on a casino will net Rhode Island a bigger share of the regional gambling market…" |
