Rhode Island Casino Study Begins

RHODE ISLAND – As reported by the Connecticut Day: "A House Finance Committee commission has begun its nine-month study on gambling, hoping to rise above criticism that it was created to delay a casino proposal by the Narragansett Indian tribe. One of the panel's loudest critics, Narragansett Indian tribe Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas, attended Tuesday's meeting.

"`We're just looking for a fair process across the board,' he told The Providence Journal. Thomas criticized lawmakers when they created the Special House Commission to Study Gaming, which destroyed any chance for the tribe's casino proposal in West Warwick to move forward this year.

"…Rep. Paul Sherlock, D-Warwick, said mistrust of the process has shaped the commission.

"…Thomas said despite earlier concerns, he became encouraged when lawmakers persuaded the state Lottery Commission to put off a vote to expand video-slot machines at Lincoln Park and Newport Grand Jai Alai until the study commission finished its work…"
