Residents have Mixed Feelings About New Casino

10 September 2002

CONNECTICUT – As reported by the Huntington Herald: "Jobs, new state tax revenue, an increase in tourism, and major city renovations - these are among the anticipated benefits the Golden Hill Paugussetts are touting if they are able to build a casino in Bridgeport.

"…Shelton residents have some concerns about the effects a nearby casino might have on this city, while also praising the potential advantages.

"Some city officials believe the debate between the Golden Hill Paugussetts and the BIA on the legitimacy of the tribe is one sign of problems with a casino in Bridgeport.

"`People need to understand the ramifications to the area when you create another entity known to no one,' said Mayor Mark A. Lauretti. `There is no guarantee that the Paugussetts will cooperate with us. There are big questions as to the legitimacy of the tribe, and the ramifications as to what happens when the tribe has sovereignty. The problems exist across the board.'

"…Residents are concerned about increased traffic a casino would generate on nearby highways such as I-95, Route 8 and the Merritt Parkway.

"…School Supt. Leon Sylvester, who also sits on the Planning and Zoning Commission, sees a potential increase in traffic on major highways affecting local streets.

"…Some residents said they believe that overall, a casino will help build up Bridgeport and make it more inviting.

"Resident Kelly Scanlon said she thought a casino would help Bridgeport economically, and also would help small businesses in that city.

"Lauren Flaum noted the casino would bring in jobs.

"…Resident Mary Lynn said she thinks Connecticut has enough casinos, between Foxwoods in Ledyard and Mohegan Sun in Uncasville…"
