Reps. Goodlatte, Eshoo and Green Criticize Gambling Bill

WASHINGTON -- June 16, 2000 – As reported by The San Francisco Chronicle: "Republican and Democratic members of House Telecom Subcommittee took turns Thurs.criticizing HR-3215 by Rep. Goodlatte (R-Va.)that seeks to outlaw online gambling but contains protections for horse and dog racing, Indian gaming, jai alai.Said Rep.Eshoo (D-Cal.), who represents Silicon Valley: 'It's rife with loopholes...' Goodlatte acknowledged that bill would permit practice that's legal now -- horse or dog racing operations forming 'closed loop' or intranet operations, which could even become interstate if all states involved agreed to participate. Rep.Green (D-Tex.)said 'I'm quite surprised we're going to legalize gambling over the Internet,' referring to bill's exceptions.'I have a suggestion -- we could just ban Internet gambling.'…"
