Reggie Jackson Cuts Ties to Gambling Site

7 August 2000

NEW YORK -- Aug. 5, 2000 -- (News Brief) -- As reported by the Associated Press: "Reggie Jackson won't be doing any more business with Costa Rican company tied to Internet gambling.

..." Jackson angrily cut ties to the operation after discovering the unauthorized use of his name on a gambling Web site. The Hall of Fame slugger sold the use of his name for a site called reggiejacksoncasino.com, which offer surfers casino-type games. However, the operators of that site used his name on another of their sites, placethatbet.com, which includes a sportsbook.

...`` 'We have no association at all with the Web site,' Jackson said Friday from his home in Monterrey, Calif....

"The name of the company is Transworld Network SA WorldNet Casinos Inc., located in San Jose, Costa Rica.

"...'Our name was used without permission on the gaming site in reference to sports betting and we disassociated ourselves, all with the compliance of major league baseball and all with their support.'

"... after getting word of the second site, Paul Beeston, baseball's chief operating officer, advised Jackson to withdraw from the operation.

"... Jackson's original agreement permitted him to withdraw his name if baseball was troubled by the association. He pulled out as soon as he learned of the link to the gambling site, before getting word from baseball to disassociate himself.

`` 'My relationship with the Yankees and baseball is alive and well,' Jackson said. 'I don't want to detract from that...' "
