Reform of Louisiana Tribal Compacts Rejected22 May 2003BATON ROUGE, Louisiana – As reported by the Associated Press: "Lawmakers soundly rejected a push Wednesday to change the way the state negotiates with Indian tribes for compacts, saying it only would give the public the illusion it has more input. "Rep. Dan Flavin, R-Lake Charles, said his bill was designed to force the governor to deal with Indian tribes publicly and with more input, setting up a five-member commission to deal with compacts. "…Flavin said Gov. Mike Foster negotiated in secret with the Jena Band of Choctaw Indians to put a casino at Vinton, closer to the Texas border than four state-licensed riverboat casinos in Lake Charles. "The Vinton proposal was rejected by the Interior Department, but Flavin said local government officials and the general public that would have been affected by the casino didn't know about the state's deal until a local newspaper reported it…" |
