Rain Makes Things Difficult for Del Mar

9 September 2002

DEL MAR, California -- As reported by the North County Times: ``The weatherman played havoc with the races on Friday.

``First, main track superintendent Steve Wood was forced to seal the dirt surface when persistent rains occurred during the late morning and early afternoon hours.

``However, Del Mar was able to avoid its first off track since July 31, 1991 because Wood's crew was able to open up the surface 47 minutes prior to the 3:30 p.m. first post. There was some moisture in the surface, but not enough to slow down the times.

``The turf course was another story.

``After Timber Baron ($10) won the second race at one mile on the grass, jockeys asked that the sixth race be taken off the turf due to the softness of the course.

``As for the main track, some observers think it will remain moist due to the current weather pattern, which features high humidity.

``...There was one injury in the third race when Tribal Trick had to be vanned off after finishing. Track stewards said he was reported to be unsound in the right front.

``..The inclement weather also kept the crowd down to 9,327 on-track, one of the lowest attendance numbers since Del Mar started `Four o'Clock Fridays.'..."
