Racino Backers Travel Through State7 April 2004MINNESOTA -- As reported by the Crookston Times: ``A recently released University of Minnesota study that shows the horse industry generating almost $1 billion in economic activity annually in the state - but that the actual impact for such high activity is relatively low - has proponents of the "racino" at Shakopee's Canterbury Park singing the praises of the state-run casino idea. ``Carin Offerman, boarding director at Canterbury Park, and Kay King, executive director of the Minnesota Thoroughbred Association, are traveling the state emphasizing the merits of the a casino at the race track. ``…The U of M study found that horses are bred and raised in each of Minnesota's 87 counties. Overall, Minnesota is ranked ninth nationally in its number of horses, but the state's per-horse value sits in 45th place nationally, at $1,200 per horse. ``The better facilities, the more prestigious shows and races and other amenities that racino revenue would bring to Canterbury Park and other equine facilities would boost that ranking, Offerman said. ``The equine impact is clear in Crookston, King said, with the University of Minnesota, Crookston becoming a hub for equine industries management students…" |
